In 1648, under the sponsorship of Prince Willem Frederik van Nassau, a pleasure garden was laid out here as a dedication to the end of the 80-years War and the peace of Münster. It stayed shut to the public for 150 years, before King Willem I proclaimed it open to the public, giving the gardens to the people of Leeuwarden. In the summer months, visitors can enjoy one of the Prinsentuin-concerts every Sunday afternoon. The Prinsentuin and its surrounds is also a haven for water sports enthusiasts, with cheap moorings, good service, and a beautiful location.
