Johannes Brahms - Clarinettrio opus 114

Ludwig van Beethoven - clarinet trio opus 38 Beethoven himself arranged his septet opus 20 as a trio opus 38 for clarinet, cello and piano. The septet was one of Beethoven's most successful and popular works and circulated in many editions and arrangements for different movements.

Robert Zuidam - clarinet trio Speciaal composed especially for the Gauguin Ensemble due to the ensemble's 25th anniversary. Robert Zuidam was born in Gouda and studied composition with Philippe Boesmans and Klaas de Vries at the Conservatory of Rotterdam. He has taught composition at the Utrecht Conservatory and was Erasmus Visiting Professor at Harvard University. "When I was asked some time ago if I would like to compose a piece for the Gauguin Ensemble's series of anniversary concerts, I was immediately enthusiastic. The sound world of clarinet, cello and piano is one that is close to my heart and gives me the expressive possibilities to arrive at a glowing argument."

Arearea will try to translate the exotic and exuberant mysticism of Gauguin's painting into a captivating and energetic soundscape for clarinet, cello and piano.

Johannes Brahms - clarinet trio opus 114 The trio was written in Bad Ischl in the summer of 1891 for clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. This is a magical work: the music is gentle, melancholic, warmly nostalgic and fleetingly terrifying, making perfect use of each of these characteristics of the colourful clarinet. Brahms literally experienced a late 'Indian Summer' as a composer.
