Dare to dream. Dare to act. Dare to be different. Show courage by working on the Friesland of the future as you want it to be. That’s what Leeuwarden-Friesland 2018 is about. They are our themes and form the backbone of our story. A story of welcoming, investigating new options and making connections with worlds that you do not yet know. A story of building together on an environment that is a bit better than today and yesterday. Even after 2018. We believe that can happen and our programme, consisting of over 50 major events and hundreds of community initiatives, is the proof.
Our ambitions are idiosyncratic and have no limits. No valley is too low and no mountain too high. Leeuwarden-Friesland 2018 dreams across borders with the programme. With head held high and an outstretched hand, we show ourselves to the rest of the world on behalf of the Netherlands. Big deeds are born from small initiatives and the young in spirit is strong for the future. This is workable – our programme proves it. By the way, none of our programme elements is stuffy. With historical figures like Mata Hari and Escher and events like 11Fountains and Look@Me, we show the world that Friesland has never been afraid to renew itself, and that we dare to dream even bigger in 2018.
By standing up for the Frisian heritage, the landscape and the northern way of life, Leeuwarden-Friesland 2018 wants to build an environment that we can pass on. Because our province is not only beautiful, it’s also diverse, accessible and unique. We want to preserve and protect this by bringing new life to old discussions and finding new insights using courage, art and culture. We are committed to biodiversity and to show its importance. So we once again make vibrant fields out of our pastures, turn the Wadden coast into an open-air museum full of art, new energy from water and new-found friends from strange worlds. This requires courage, but you won’t accomplish much if you’re afraid to try.
If you do what you’ve always done, you get what you’ve always got. That’s why in 2018 Friesland shows that things really can be different. Because no matter how strong and confident we are in being Frisian, the time for focussing inward is over and we must share what we love. Leeuwarden-Friesland 2018 is also about finding each other while the world is rapidly changing around us. It’s about a self-contained and involved community with an eye for each other’s ideas, opportunities and challenges. And it is especially good when it’s something strange and unknown because things that come from far away are often really nice. So think big, think differently: giants in the city, theatre in the greenhouses, art in no-man’s land. We give our imagination the space and our space to imagination..
