De Ploeg – 100 years of avant-garde in Groningen
A century old and still very much alive. In 2018, it will be a hundred years since a group of young Groningen artists founded the De Ploeg art collective. To celebrate this, they’re part of the main programme of the European Capital of Culture with an exhibition, musical performances, walking routes and other activities.
De Ploeg
At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a struggle within Groningen’s artistic landscape. Old and new were separating from each other. They were called the ‘young savages’. With the creation of De Ploeg, this group of young artists wanted to make clear that something had to change. The artistic landscape in Groningen had to be ploughed.

Exhibition
The centrepiece of 100 years De Ploeg takes place in the Groninger Museum. This is where the ‘Avant-garde. De Ploeg 1918-1928’ exhibition will be held in 2018. You can see paintings, drawings, prints and graphics by De Ploeg members such as Jan Wiegers, Johan Dijkstra and Jan Altink.
Contrast
To provide contrast with works by contemporaries and non-De Ploeg members, works of art by Jozef Israëls and Otto Eerelman will also be exhibited. The exhibition will also show works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Vincent van Gogh; artists who had great influence on the development of De Ploeg members.
Symposia, performances and walking routes
In addition to the exhibition, the foundation Stichting 100 jaar De Ploeg is organising activities in the city and province of Groningen. This includes symposia, musical performances and walking routes.
