Friday 26 January in Heerenveen
Catch the train, jump on your bike or hop into your car - just be sure to get there. You won’t want to miss the Opening Weekend of Leeuwarden-Friesland. It all starts this weekend: not just the beginning of a great cultural year but also an era when everyone can make a difference in the interests of others and our planet. Sunder dy kinne we net begjinne: we can’t start without you. The Opening Weekend is full of nice surprises. Take it from us: you don’t want to miss it.
Opening Weekend: 26 & 27 January
Friday – all of Friesland
At 12:00 noon, pupils in the primary schools in Friesland will get us off to a singing start. Together, they will sing the theme song for LF2018: 'Seis oere thús’ (home by six). On Friday evening, you can experience the Winterjûnenocht (an evening of winter enjoyment): listen to the most unusual stories in Frisian Museums, in homes and at other special locations. On this evening, the museums will not charge an admission fee. Follow this link to find out more about the Friday evening programme during the Opening Weekend.
Saturday – Leeuwarden
On the second day of the Opening Weekend, we’ll focus on Leeuwarden. Adje Lambertsz’s children, the Friesian horses that star in a theatrical production (de Stormruiter), musicians performing in the greenhouses of ‘Lost in the Greenhouse’, the potato peelers in ‘Potatoes Go Wild’, skûtsjes (sailboats) with music from Never Ending Orchestra and Marijke Muoi from Under de Toer, etc. On this day, we’ll fill the city to the brim with elements of our main programme of events. Excitement will build as we head toward the evening when the city centre will become another world. Everything will start buzzing, louder and louder. Be sure to be there that evening when musical fireworks will officially open the year. Follow this link to find out when each event takes place.
Led by Ira Judkovskaja, the artistic team consists of Tatiana Pratley, Inés Sauer, Peter Sijbenga, Jan Ros, Linda Eijssen, Sytze Pruiksma and Nynke Laverman, Koos de Vries and Mr. Beam. Choirs, brass bands, horns playing fanfares, orchestras, dance groups and many, many others will also be participating in the Opening Weekend.
