Run to the train, grab your car or hop on your bicycle to be there, because you won’t want to miss the opening weekend of Leeuwarden-Friesland 2018. On 26 and 27 January, experience with us what the dream of our iepen mienskip (open society) looks like. A new era can only be ushered in by people who believe that we all can mean something to each other and the world. So rain or shine, we cannot start without you.

The Evening of 2018 Stories
When has iepen mienskip actually succeeded? Tryater asked that question to everyone who wanted to think along. The answer? 'When we’ve succeeded in really listening to each other'. That listening starts at noon on Friday, when all the children from Friesland sing together, and will continue into Friday evening. Then all the museums and residents in Friesland, from Schiermonnikoog to Oudemirdum and from Zurich to Appelscha, will open their doors to tell you what story they would like to bring to the future and why.

The year in a day
On Saturday, we zoom in on the city of Leeuwarden. Throughout the day, you walk inside and outside through impressions of the entire year’s programme. The excitement rises in the evening and so does the sense of togetherness. There’s a buzz through the city and it begins to swell. All the people come together in Leeuwarden’s several squares, under the tall Oldehove towers.

Professionals and amateurs impressively fill all these squares with theatre, dance, singing and music. The squares are linked by the music and projections. You listen, look and are part of the whole.

We work towards the song Seis oere thús by Nynke Laverman and Sytze Pruiksma, after which the bells ring. Not only in Leeuwarden, but in the whole of Friesland, in order to usher in the beginning of this special year.
