5 fantastic cycling routes

5 wondrous walks

Cycling

Friesland is the province for cyclists. And it shows: this year the province was once again chosen as the best cycling region in the Netherlands! And this shouldn’t come as a surprise. With our province-wide cycling network, culinary cycling routes along the eleven cities and our accessibility for E-bikes, Friesland is suitable for all cyclists! Whether with a mountain bike, city bike, road bike or tricycle, it’s all possible. There are also not many provinces with such a diversity in nature. Just in the Drents-Friese Wold alone you can see a variety of shifting sand, heath and forest. In the north, bike along the extensive paths where you can enjoy a far-reaching view or cycle along our seawall, where you can admire the special flora and fauna of the mudflats.

Walking

Did you know that you can walk the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela from Friesland? A lovely route from Sint Jacobieparochie to Spain. Fortunately, you don’t have to worry if this 4-month long walk is a bit too far. Friesland has an extensive walking network! With routes from 3 to over 200 kilometres, there’s something for every level of walker. There are special routes in between such as the Groot Frieslandpad from Bergen aan Zee to Leer, which has even been declared the Walking Route of 2017 for the Netherlands and Belgium. Starting in September, you can also walk over the Elfstedenpad, a path for pedestrians who want to complete the eleven-city route at their own pace.

Groot-Frieslandpad
