The lookout point in Fochteloo offers a spectacular view of the peat landscape, grasses and water. It looks as if the land has never been touched but of course nothing could be further from the truth. However, nature is now effortlessly resuming its role as the owner of the land.
What will the landscape look like a hundred years from now if natural processes are allowed to operate unhindered?
In the winter, geese spend the night on the water. During the day they forage the fields for the remains of the harvest. Their cry can be heard loud and clear.

Op 10 september 1945 zijn acht mensen omgekomen bij een ongeluk bij het opruimen van een zeemijn. Dit gebeurde buitendijks ter hoogte van de zomerdijk in de buurt van de Hoek van de Band. In 2015 is een monument onthuld.
