Lionserpolder Nature Reserve

Leons

Lionserpolder is an area of reclaimed land between the villages of Jorwerd and Lions. The land is managed as a nature reserve and has been declared a bird sanctuary by the Dutch Government.

Lionserpolder is an area of reclaimed land between the villages of Jorwerd and Lions. Some of the land is managed by Natuurmonumenten, the organisation that preserves landscapes and cultural heritage in the Netherlands.

The rest of the nature here is managed by local farmers. The lowest lying stretches of land are owned by Natuurmonumenten. These are the most attractive sites for meadow birds. The area has been declared a bird sanctuary by the Dutch Government. With your help, together with the farmers we can create even more biodiversity here. Where possible we will raise the water level further. This will enrich the soil life, which will be beneficial for the birds.
