Drents-Friese Wold National Park is one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands. In 2000, this area of more than 6,000 hectares of forest, heathland, drift sand and river valley grassland was declared a national park.

As one of the most important Special Protection Areas in Europe, Drents-Friese Wold National Park is part of the Natura 2000 Network.

There are plans to increase biodiversity and enhance the habitats in the park with water being the main focal point. The management of the park and local authorities are receiving funding for this project from the European Union.
