Occupation of the Blesse bridge by the NBS
On 8 April 1945, the words "The bottle is empty" sounded on Radio Orange. This code message was the go-ahead for the resistance to start putting bridges, roads and railway lines out of order thirty-six hours later. The Frisian resistance answered this call en masse.
As soon as the Allied vanguard drew near, the armed resistance was also deployed to support their advance. And that sometimes meant that there were also bridges that had to be occupied rather than deactivated. One such action took place in the municipality of Weststellingwerf.
On 12 April 1945, the Canadian vanguard approached the village of De Blesse. The local section of the Dutch Domestic Armed Forces (NBS) was instructed by the resistance leadership to scout the railway bridge and road bridge (the Blesse bridge) over the Linde and, if possible, to occupy them.These bridges were important for maintaining the speed of the Canadian advance. Partly for this reason, they were also often guarded by German soldiers. In most cases, the bridges were also fitted with explosives. This allowed the bridge to be blown up if the Germans eventually had to retreat.
The reconnaissance revealed that the Blesse bridge was guarded by a total of about 10 soldiers. The NBS then decided to attack the bridge from two sides in the evening. Thanks to several aerial arms drops, the resistance fighters were well armed. In the dark, the men set off and split up into three groups. They eventually took up posts north and south of the bridge. The plan was to storm the bridge at two in the morning from the south.To their surprise, their fire was not returned as they approached the bridge. The guards appeared to have disappeared. With that, the bridge had unexpectedly fallen into the hands of the NBS without bloodshed. Moreover, no explosives were found to be affixed to bridge. After the bridge was secured, it was guarded until the Canadians arrived.
News of the occupation of the bridge was reported to the section commander the same night. And through other means of communication, the news also reached the Canadians. Holding the bridge facilitated and accelerated the Canadians' advance later in the day.

Het dorp Joure was in april 1945 voor zowel de Duitse als Canadese militairen een belangrijk knooppunt. De inwoners zagen aanvankelijk honderden moegestreden Duitse militairen voorbij komen. Enkele dagen daarna lag het dorp op de route van ditmaal duizenden Canadezen.
Begin april werd duidelijk dat de bevrijding van Noord-Nederland dichtbij was. De Duitse troepen in Overijssel zagen zich genoodzaakt om zich terug te trekken naar o.a. Friesland. En in Joure was dat niet ongemerkt voorbij gegaan. Het Friese verzet rapporteerde op 11 april nog hoe circa 500 Duitse militairen door Joure liepen. Hun doel was om uiteindelijk via de Afsluitdijk of via de Friese havens de oversteek naar Noord-Holland te maken.
Een dorpsbewoner herinnerde zich het voorbijgaan van soldaten:
‘De meesten in haveloze uniformen, met paard en wagen of op gestolen fietsen, jonge jongens van 16 à 17 jaar oud; bovendien namen ze onderweg mee wat ze dachten nodig te hebben’.
Een ander schreef in zijn dagboek over de vermoeide Duitse soldaten:
‘velen geheel of gedeeltelijk in burgerkleren met daar tussendoor op boerenwagens gezeten Duitsers, die het lopen niet meer aan konden. Het geheel maakte een aller miserabelste indruk’.
Joure lag dus langs de route naar zowel de Afsluitdijk als een aantal Zuiderzeehavens (nu: IJsselmeer). En beide waren uiterst belangrijk voor de Duitse troepen omdat deze een laatste uitweg boden naar Noord-Holland, dat nog stevig in Duitse handen was.
De Canadezen wisten dit ook. De Friese havens en de Kop van de Afsluitdijk waren mede daarom belangrijke doelen van de Canadezen. En dus was ook Joure onderdeel van die plannen. Van een serieuze poging om Friesland te verdedigen tegen de naderende Canadezen was van Duitse kant geen sprake. Vrijwel alle acties waren er op gericht om die opmars te vertragen zodat zoveel mogelijk troepen konden ontkomen. Daarom bliezen zij veel bruggen op en op belangrijke knooppunten werden troepen achtergelaten.
In Joure werden geen Duitse troepen achtergelaten om verzet te bieden. In plaats daarvan koos de bezetter er voor om een beperkt aantal troepen in Scharsterbrug te posteren. Die positie over de Scharster-Rijn was beter te verdedigen. En daar zou uiteindelijk ook inderdaad hard gevochten worden. In Joure zelf werd geen schot gelost toen in de ochtend van 15 april de pantserwagens van de Duke of York's Royal Canadian Hussars vanuit Heerenveen als eersten het dorp binnen reden.Dit verkenningsregiment had de taak om alternatieve routes naar Sneek en Leeuwarden te vinden. En hun verblijf in Joure was dus van korte duur. Niet veel later volgde echter de infanterie van het Régiment de la Chaudière en in de middag arriveerden er ook Sherman tanks en meer Canadese infanterie van andere eenheden.
Via Joure werden achtereenvolgens Sneek, Bolsward en later ook Lemmer bevrijd. Het dorp bleef een belangrijk knooppunt in de route naar Zuidwest-Friesland. Bovendien werd er bij Joure nog enige tijd artilleriegeschut geplaatst om Duitse posities bij het nabijgelegen Scharsterbrug, Follega en in Lemmer te beschieten.
