Wind Engine at De Veenhoop

Veenhoop

This unusual windmill was built as a large American wind engine. It was transported to the Netherlands by a trading company based in Rotterdam in 1926 and now drains the land to the northeast of the village of De Veenhoop.

The wind engine at De Veenhoop has been declared a protected monument. It was designed by an architect by the name of Lourens and has an 11-metre diameter sail with 30 blades.

The wind engine was not always on this site. From 1926 to 1995 it was on a polder dike next to the Kromme Ee waterway. In the year 2000, the wind engine was restored and towed to the village of De Veenhoop. The wind engine is owned by the It Damshûs Foundation.
