Musical performance Gerard & Compagnie: Emily, onbekend voor de wereld (Emily, unbeknownst to the world)
Take a look
It all started in 1992 with the little book "Poems," by Emily Dickinson (translated by Louise van Santen). Gerard Nijborg, of Gerard & Company, has spent the past few years immersing himself in the world of this Emily Dickinson. He has set some 16 of her poems to music over the years, and together with the Company, wonderful arrangements have been created.
'Emily, onbekend voor de wereld' (Unknown to the World) has become a musical performance about the mysterious American poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886). The theme of the performance is her life as seen from the point of view of her sister Lavinia. The latter discovered only after her sister's death that she had written a large number of beautiful poems.
As part of the music performance in literary café 'De Gouden Leeuw', two of the poems will be sung in Frysk, in Obe Postma's translation (edited by Pyt Jon Sikkema). With the string quartet Risata as a special guest.
Gerard & Company:
- Gerard Nijborg solo vocals, guitars, mandolin, 5sn. banjo
- Lieuwe Koster vocals, guitars, accordion, harmonica, mandolin
- Alco Hoogcarspel vocals, violin, mandolin, mandola
- Baudien Dijkstra narrator, vocals

The translations of the spoken poems in the performance are by: Peter Verstegen, Louise van Santen, Willem Wilmink and Simon Vestdijk.
