Gaia Lemmer

An illuminated globe, seven metres in diameter, shows the Earth as it looks from the Moon. Gaia is a touring artwork by the British artist Luke Jerram. In Greek mythology, Gaia is the personification of Mother Earth.

The artwork offers the public an opportunity to see our planet the way the crew of the Apollo 17 saw it in 1972. The installation aims to enable visitors to feel what the astronauts felt when they looked down at planet Earth. This experience evokes a sense of awe, a profound understanding of the interconnectedness of all life on Earth and our shared responsibility for taking good care of our planet and its climate.

Jerram created the globe to scale, namely 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth. By standing 211 metres away from it, you will be able to see the Earth as it appears from the Moon.

As part of Arcadia, Gaia will be on display at various locations throughout the province, both at indoor and outdoor venues.
