Poetry from Friesland and Malta

Leeuwarden and Het Bildt have had a relationship with Malta since about 1850. Every year around late September, the first seed potatoes leave Het Bildt and are shipped to Malta. The new potatoes come back the same way in March.

Both Malta and Friesland are also officially bilingual and they have a wealth of modern and classic poetry.

This led to a literary poetry project: an exchange of Frisian and Maltese poems that were shipped together with the seed potatoes and Maltese potatoes and attached to specially designed jute bags.

There were exchanges in 2014 and 2016. There are two exchanges in 2018: the Frisian poet Arjan Hut performed at the Inizjamed Poetry Festival in Malta in August, and several of those poems are displayed on large canvases that can be seen at the Kûnstsinnige Eerpels exhibition at the Natuurmuseum Fryslân from mid-October 2018 until early January 2019.

On 4 January 2019, a poetry afternoon will be organised in the Atrium: (international) poets from primary school age and up will perform their own work. Two Maltese poets will be guests. A multilingual literary publication has been created from the project, which can be ordered and purchased at the Afûk bookstore and gift shop (www.afuk.nl), amongst others, in Leeuwarden.
