125 Years of Escher: 3D-Art Tour

This event has already taken place

Leeuwarden

One hundred and twenty-five years ago, M.C. Escher was born in Leeuwarden. The iconic graphic artist grew up in the city palace that now houses Keramiekmuseum Princessehof. To celebrate his life and work, a special 3D art tour is now dedicated to him.

This year marks exactly 125 years since the birth of one of Leeuwarden's most famous residents: Maurits Cornelis Escher. The iconic graphic artist spent his early years in the city palace that now houses the Princessehof Ceramics Museum. The city is celebrating this anniversary in several ways, including a route along seven 3D artworks by Leon Keer, Massina, Remko van Schaik and Ruben Poncia. The artworks can be seen from June 17 through August 31.

Follow the route along the works. You can start or end (or just crisscross the route) at the Princessehof Ceramics Museum. In fact, the Princessehof has a wonderful exhibition dedicated to M.C. Escher. On June 17, Escher's birthday, the route will be festively opened and the Princessehof will be free to visit! (Pssst: you can walk the route before the 17th).

Leon Keer

For Leeuwarden, Leon Keer is an old friend. In 2018, Keer made four Escherian street drawings as part of the project Planet Escher, accompanying the major exhibition Escher on a Journey at the Fries Museum. Two years later, he returned to Leeuwarden to enrich the Princessehof Ceramics Museum, Escher's birthplace, with a beautiful mural. Here he drew inspiration from the famous work Hol and Bol. The mural can still be seen today as part of the exhibition Thuis bij M.C. Escher.

Leon Keers world, however, is much larger than Leeuwarden alone. As a leading artist in anamorphosis art, he carries out commissions all over the world: he leaves no continent uncovered. In his work, he not infrequently broaches social issues, such as climate and livability. Thus, his work is not only aesthetically beautiful and attractive but challenges the viewer to think.

Massina

Massina (Marije Spelbos) has worked as a graphic designer at an advertising and design agency in the Netherlands for the past 20 years. Currently, her portfolio is mainly filled with 3D street art that she creates around the world together with Leon Keer. For her own work, she draws inspiration from various cultures (with a love for Japanese culture), architectural landscapes, typography and street art with graphic appeal. In addition to public art, Massina works from her studio in Utrecht on abstract art in which the contrast used creates a certain field of tension, but through the right composition also radiates tranquility.

Remko van Schaik

After successfully completing 'De School voor Decoratie', followed by a job in Stand-Design, Remko van Schaik started making murals, illustrations and 3D objects. At first these were still targeted commissions, but when the artist witnessed a group of street painters in Utrecht in 2007, he immediately became enthusiastic about this art form. He made his first drawing in 2008, after which street painting became an important part of his work and life. He specialized in 3D streetpaintings and anamorphic paintings and finds this the most beautiful: "3D streetpainting is a great challenge for your creativity and skills. In addition, it is also a very social event with the public."

Ruben Poncia

This experienced artist has been working since 1996. The first years of his creative career he worked mostly for cinemas and theaters, painting large billboards for new films and theater productions. This was followed by murals, lettering and signs for stores, illustrations and cartoons for magazines. Poncia makes acrylic and oil paintings in a realistic or surrealist style. In doing so, he likes to use perspective tricks. When he came into contact with street painting, he was able to use this nicely for anamorphic (3D) street art. Thus you can clearly see this in his work for this 3D art tour.
