Today, growing plants and gardening in a vegetable garden are very popular. This was also the case in the eighteenth century. Princess Maria Louise van Hessen Kassel (1688-1765), also known as Marijke Meu, had a preference for beautifully landscaped parks and vegetable gardens. The Leeuwarden city park the Prinsentuin is a good example. But she also had exotic fruits such as pineapples and lemons grown at her estate just outside the city.

Exhibition

The mini-exhibition in the HCL provides more information about the princess, her gardens and her gardener Johann Hermann Knoop. There are recipes from the eighteenth century, including the Liwwadder buckwheat porridge Potmarge and a recipe for apple pie. You can download the recipe cards via a QR code or take a printout version with you! Be sure to take a look at the edible garden that has been landscaped for the HCL. Pick your own mint leaves and make a delicious cup of tea. There is a free activity sheet for children, in which they can search for insects and animals in the garden and in the exhibition.

Nassau summer

Snoeptrommel van prinses Maria Louise has been organized in the context of the Nassau summer. In July and August, the HCL organizes various city walks and other activities about Maria Louise, the Frisian Nassau's and Frisian nobility.
