The Frisian capital is the place to celebrate King’s Day. With the biggest free market in Friesland, convivial bands, DJ’s, and other exciting artists, King’s Day in Leeuwarden is one big party!

On the hunt for games, new reading material, or somewhere to sell your old coffee cups? From 08:30 to 17:00, wend your way through the hundreds of stalls, accompanied by recorder and violin music. Who knows what you’ll find- maybe even some treasures for a bargain price! Not a fan of second-hand? Then head to the Nieuwestad, where a market will be selling brand-spanking new products. After midday, you’ll be serenaded by music that wafts across various squares in the city, and the Prinsentuin.

Free-market, 08:30-17:00. Roam amongst the stalls and bargains spread over a huge amount of the city centre. Who knows what you’ll find- maybe some treasure for a bargain price!

Fête: 09:00-17:00. Not a fan of second-hand? A city fair will be held in the Nieuwestad and at the Waagplein, full of brand new products.

Leeuwarder Music Space, Wilhelminaplein, 12:00-00:00. In a huge tent, in the middle of the city centre, you can enjoy Dutch-language music by local Leeuwarder heroes. Free entry for all.

King’s Day Outdoor 2019, Klokplein, 13:00-23:00. Here you’ll find a techno event organised by Club Hemingway and Technostate Inc. Featuring such artists as Carmen Lisa, Rice ‘n Roni, and Bermuda B. Free entry. After 23:00 the party continues at Club Hemmingway.

King’s Day Concert, Prinsentuin, 14:00-19:00. In the ‘music dome’ in the Prinsentuin you’ll find the King’s Day concert. From pop to world music. Entry is free.

Dance, Mata Hariplein, 14:30-00:00. During King’s Day, the Mata Hariplein will host the dance event of the year. Get out of your head with crowd favourites by (amongst others) Steff Da Campo, Martin Harden, and Koen Groeneveld. Free entry.

‘t Oranjeplein, Oldehoofsterkerkhof, 16:00-00:00. During King’s Day and King’s Night, the square at the foot of the leaning Oldehove tower will play host to a brand new event. National and locally-known pop, rock, urban, and 90’s artists. During King’s Day the billing has Vangrail, Sound Rush, Jack & Lewis and a whole load more.

During King’s Night on the 26th April, feast your ears on “ ‘t Foute Uur” by Q Music, The Memphis Maniacs, and Klubheads. Tickets for both days are available at bijdeoldehove.nl 

To make this day as smooth-running and fun as possible, please note the below tips.

Transport: on King’s Day, the centre of the city is closed to cars between 08:30 and 17:00. Therefore, please utilise public transport, or bike into the city. You can park your bike for free between 07:30-06:00 at the bike park Zaailand. The bike park in the Sint Jacobsstraat will be open on King’s Day from 19:00. Need to come by car? Note that the parking garage on the Oldehoofsterkerkhof is closed. Other garages will remain open.

Public Transport: public transport throughout Friesland will run on a Saturday schedule. On King’s Day, no buses are allowed to go through the city centre. Check via Arriva or NS to be sure of your itinerary.
