Ryptsjerk Roaming Route

(26.0 km)

This route leads you through part of the Trynwâlden region around the villages of Gytsjerk, Oentsjerk and Aldtsjerk. At one time this was once a richly wooded area within easy travelling distance of Leeuwarden. So it is hardly surprising that members of the Frisian nobility settled here early on, building many large country houses in park-like settings. Some of these can still be admired today, including Stania State country house and estate near the village of Oentsjerk and De Klinze country house and estate in the village of Aldtsjerk.

Between the Trynwâlden region and the city of Leeuwarden lies the Grote Wielen nature reserve. This low-lying wetland area is an important wintering and nesting habitat for many migratory birds.

The village of Ryptsjerk developed on an old sand ridge surrounded by peatland. As you walk or cycle through Ryptsjerk, you will undoubtedly notice the many small farms that are part of the ribbon development here. The church is right on the south edge of the village. To the northeast of the village, on Oosterdijk road, you will see a new farmhouse with numbers marking the year 1702. The numbers came from an old farm known as Ulenburgh State. At the beginning of the 17th century this was the home of Rombertus van Uilenburgh, who was mayor of Leeuwarden. His name includes the Dutch word for owls (‘uilen’). So the owls next to the entrance and on the weather vane refer to his family name. In 1634, his daughter Saskia married the famous Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn. Who knows? He may have painted here.
