De Veenhoop - Drachten | Section 4 of the Bonifatius Kloosterpad Monastery Route

This section of the Bonifatius Kloosterpad Monastery Route leads past the ruins of what was once Smelne monastery near the village of Smalle Ee and ends at the Karmelklooster monastery in Drachten, the only original monastery building that survived in Friesland.

You walk through the thriving nature of the Petgatten de Feanhoop wetland reserve and continue along the raised Bûtendiken where the water level is regulated by a system of windmills and pumping stations. Villages such as De Wilgen developed nearby. The villages of Noorder-Dragten and Zuider-Dragten were later combined to form Drachten, which is now the second largest town in Friesland.

Wind Engine at De Veenhoop

This unusual windmill was built as a large American wind engine. It was transported to the Netherlands by a trading company based in Rotterdam in 1926 and now drains the land to the northeast of the village of De Veenhoop.

Nieuwe Noordergemaal

Bij het natuurgebied de Petgatten, in De Veenhoop staat hier het nieuw Noordergemaal. Het gemaal uit 1973 verouderde en moest daarom worden vervangen. Het nieuwe gemaal heeft iets bijzonders, het is namelijk gebaseerd op een Friese kapschuur.

Voormalig klooster Smelne

Smalle Ee is het kleinste dorp van de gemeente Smallingerland. Rond 1200 was dit een toonaangevende plek: er stond een klooster gesticht door Augustijner monniken. Het kloosterterrein is nog te herkennen als een langgerekte bult in het landschap.

Karmelklooster Drachten

Dit is het enige authentieke kloostergebouw dat Friesland nog kent. In 1993 vertrokken de laatste zusters en werd het gebouw in gebruik genomen als congreslocatie. Momenteel wordt het verbouwd tot een zorginstelling.

Van knooppunt 66 door naar 23 en 28.

Bij Petgatten de Feanhoop rechtsaf naar Drachtster Heawei en vervolgens linksaf over schelpenpad terug naar Bûtendiken (rechtsaf).

Van knooppunt 28 door naar 24 - 25 (fietspad langs de Biskopswei)  21 - 32 - 45 - 42 richting 44 tot aan het Karmelklooster Drachten.
