Burdaard has about 1,200 residents and is located along the Dokkumer Ee, the waterway between Dokkum and Leeuwarden. About 12,000 boats pass the village in the summer. Burdaard is passed twice during the Elfstedentocht. Burdaard used to be part of the municipality of Dantumadeel but has been part of Ferwerderadeel since 1984. Burdaard falls mainly under the Burdaard national conservation area and more or less counts as a completely protected village.
