In the past, market traders were required to have their goods weighed at the Waag (weigh house). This requirement applied particularly to wholesale traders in meat and dairy products. The first recorded mention of the Waag dates from 1483, although it probably existed before then. The building you see today dates from 1598 and remained in use as a weigh house until 1880. Today, it is home to De Stadswaag brasserie and lunchroom. With its spacious sunny terrace and welcoming interior, it’s definitely worth a stop during your visit to Leeuwarden!
Today, you can still visit the Stadswaag, now home to a brasserie. Enjoy a delicious lunch either inside, with seating for around 45 guests, or outside on the sunny terrace, which seats around 120.
