"As a nature enthusiast, you're in for a treat in Friesland. With four national parks, two national landscapes, the only two Dark Sky Parks in the Netherlands, and UNESCO World Heritage status for the Wadden Sea, you won't know where nature ends and the cities and villages begin. Enjoy the expansive landscapes or explore the lush forests teeming with flora and fauna. It's all right here in Friesland."

National Parks and landscapes

Our four National Parks showcase the diversity of the landscape. Marshland, forests, an island in the Wadden Sea, and a lake that was once a sea. In addition, the national landscapes anchor our Frisian culture and people in the environment. Explore the coasts and lakes in Southwest Fryslân and the picturesque landscape in the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden.

Friesland by night

True darkness is as rare as the Northern Lights in the Netherlands. But the opportunity to experience it is much more abundant. Do you dare to explore the darkest spots without a flashlight? Lose yourself in an endless starry sky, dance among the night butterflies, and visit the only two Dark Sky Parks in the Netherlands.

Both Lauwersmeer and the Boschplaat on Terschelling have earned this official title. These are areas that are publicly accessible while simultaneously preserving nature and darkness. Light pollution is addressed and reduced to the essential minimum in these places. You will be amazed at how nature comes to life while we are asleep and how many stars you can still see in the light-polluted Netherlands. Embrace the night, discover the darkness in the Lauwersmeer National Park and the Boschplaat on Terschelling.
