Sportstad is an initiative of the Municipality of Heerenveen, sc Heerenveen and De Friesland Health Insurer. These three partners combined their individual renovation and new-build plans into one ambitious and forward-looking concept, located in one of the most iconic areas of Heerenveen. The area is widely known for the Abe Lenstra Stadium, home of football club sc Heerenveen. The Sportstad project received approval in 2003 and officially opened in July 2006.
Sport, healthcare and education under one roof
Sportstad Heerenveen is a multifunctional sports centre where sport, healthcare and education come together. Elite sport, grassroots sport and sports medical care are all housed in one location. The centre offers a high-performance environment with excellent facilities for both professional athletes and amateurs. The expertise and dedication of the staff ensure a consistently high level of quality.
Facilities
Indoors you will find three swimming pools, a sports hall, the Epke Zonderland Gymnastics Centre and two squash courts. In cooperation with various sports clubs, a wide range of sports is offered. From ball sports in the sports hall to aquatic activities in the pools. From martial arts in the dojo to judged sports in the gymnastics centre.
Outdoors you can skate at the first indoor inline skating centre in the Netherlands or practise your skills in the urban sports park. Beach sports take place on the multi-purpose sand courts, and those ready to leap across water can try fierljeppen. Sportstad offers activities for all ages and levels.
