Easterwierum (Oosterwierum) is situated between Leeuwarden and Sneek, amidst the villages of Mantgum and Rauwerd. The village originated at the location of the current hamlet of Tsjerkebuorren, which emerged on a terp (artificial dwelling mound).
A church used to stand on this terp, of which only the church tower remains today. In the 16th century, a new hamlet formed south of the terp, leading to the original terp being referred to as Oosterwierum Hoochterp.
The present village center developed around a bridge. In 1840, the area became known as Oosterwierummer Bruggebuurt, and the terp was named Kerkburen. The neighborhood around the bridge evolved into a compact village in the 20th century, particularly on the west side of the Hegedyk.
In addition to the preserved church tower in Tsjerkebuorren, the village is home to two other churches: the former Roman Catholic Sint-Wirokerk from 1925 and the former Protestant church from 1902. The neo-Gothic Sint-Wirokerk, designed by architect Wolter te Riele, replaced the church from 1792. The Protestant church was built to replace the one demolished in 1905 in Tsjerkebuorren.
