Mitselwier is a centuries-old terp village known for its well-preserved historic village centre and rich agricultural heritage.
The buildings
Mitselwier originated several centuries before the beginning of our era on a terp (artificial dwelling mound). The village centre developed around the church, which has been the heart of the village for centuries. Over time, the settlement expanded beyond the terp, while the original structure remained largely intact. Due to its special cultural-historical, urban and architectural value, the historic centre was designated a protected village landscape in 1990. The Doarpstsjerke, together with the surrounding churchyard and characteristic lime trees, forms the centrepiece of this protected area.
The potato village
From the end of the 18th century until 1984, Mitselwier was the administrative centre of the former municipality of Oost-Dongeradeel. Today, the village has around 900 inhabitants and still offers several facilities, particularly in the fields of healthcare and education. Agriculture continues to play an important role. Because of the presence of a major trading company specialising in seed and planting potatoes, Mitselwier has long been known as the “potato village.”
