The water-level monitoring station near Harlingen, in the area of the Wadden Promenade, is used to continuously monitor and record the current water level. It also registers tidal data and possible rises in sea level caused by storms.

The harbour of Harlingen plays an important role in shipping and is, among other things, the departure point for the ferry services operated by Rederij Doeksen to Terschelling and Vlieland. Up-to-date information about water levels and tides is therefore essential for captains and pilots. Based on this information, they can assess whether conditions are suitable for safely entering or leaving the harbour or mooring a vessel. The available water depth, and therefore the possible draught of ships, is also influenced by the tide.
