This tiny, tranquil village is built around a terp, topped by a beautiful Romanesque-Gothic church, with a few old houses and farmsteads gathered around it.
Jannum was founded long before the Common Era and is, quite literally, picturesque. Step inside the church to see historic objects and discover stories linked to the Reformation.
After a period of decline and restoration, the church, for many years an outpost of the Fries Museum, became a museum for medieval religious art, a role it still fulfils today. On display are gravestones and sarcophagi, including an exceptionally early portrait tomb slab. You can also admire carved capitals, a Romanesque baptismal font (early 13th century) from Jellum, and impressive fragments of a 13th-century choir screen from Wons. Made of pink Bremian sandstone, the panels depict apostles, Mary and Child, floral ornament, masks and the Lamb of God.
