Hiaure is a tiny village northwest of Dokkum with only around 70 residents. The church stands on its own terp (mound), also called a “church terp”, with the village houses starting a little further on.
This national monument was built in 1869 on the foundations of a medieval church, which had to be demolished because it was in poor condition.
Today, the simple church is managed by Stichting Vrienden van de kerk Hiaure so it can continue to serve a meaningful role in the community. The church is open on Sundays from July through September. If you’d like to look inside and it’s closed, you can pick up a key at Camping De Terp, opposite the church.
The building is used for funerals and weddings, as well as cultural gatherings. The foundation also organises events such as historical talks about the region.
REFUGIO
Pilgrims can also stay overnight here in a simple way. The church lies on several pilgrimage routes, including the Het Ziltepad, the Klooster Claercamppad and the Bonifatius Kloosterpad. Walkers on these routes can spend the night here for €15 per person.

have a route booklet or stamp card for Het Ziltepad, Claercamppad, Bonifatius Kloosterpad, or another Frisian pilgrimage route
