This characteristic polder mill tells a story of Frisian craftsmanship and the age-old struggle to keep the water at bay.
Around 1850, farmer Martinus Aukes Wierda commissioned the mill to drain the land around GuozzepĂ´le in Ezumazijl. Following a land consolidation project in 1962, the mill became redundant and gradually fell into disrepair. The municipality had it restored in 1970, replacing the original self-regulating sails with traditional Dutch-style sail latticework and canvas sails.
A further restoration followed in 1995, after Stichting Monumentenbehoud Dongeradeel became the owner. During major maintenance work in 2024, the Archimedes screw and its trough were renewed. Today, the little mill is once again in excellent condition and is kept operational by volunteer millers.
