In the little village of Jubbega in southeast Friesland there is a very special beech tree. It has low hanging branches and an enormous trunk 540 centimetres in circumference. The hole in the trunk is part of a local legend.
The tree stands next to a small peat master’s cottage, close to the road built around it.
Next to the tree there is a plaque that tells story of the ‘poppebeam’. ‘Poppe’ is the Frisian word for baby and ‘beam’ is the Frisian word for tree. According to the local legend, babies were born from the hole in the tree, which was said to have gifted the family that lived in the cottage with seven children.
