De Heide is a recreational area on the outskirts of the town of Heerenveen. Heidemeer Lake in the middle of the recreational area has a large sandy beach and is a lovely place to swim and enjoy the sun. Dogs can be let off the leash in the recreational area but not in the grazing area where there are cows and sheep. Dogs can be let off the leash on the beach between 1 October and 1 April. There is a lovely 4-kilometre walk around the lake. (Part of the route leads through a residential area on the east side of Heidemeer Lake.) There is a kiosk near the beach and there is also plenty of parking.
