The weighing house on Merk 4 is the starting point from which you can discover and explore the highlights of the beautiful town of Workum.
On the ground floor of the weighing house you will find a tourist information point where everyone is welcome to come in. With a ticket you can visit the first floor of the building and the town hall where exhibitions about Workum are shown, a town that received city rights in 1399. This was partly possible because there was a weighing house where goods were weighed and traded.
From 1504 the Workum ell (70.9 cm) was even declared the standard unit of length for the whole of Friesland, until it was replaced by the Amsterdam ell. This shows that Workum was an important centre of sea trade and shipping at that time.
One floor higher you will find the attic where you can listen to an audio story about the adventures of Workum skipper Huijte Fookles. In December 1777 he ran aground with his ship in France.
The former town hall of Workum on the other side of the square is also accessible with your ticket.
Be sure to visit It Stedhûs as well where you will find beautifully restored rooms and an attic exhibition about the Second World War and resistance in Workum. Here visitors experience life under occupation through stories and memories.
Battle of the Wadden
This location is also part of the cycling route ‘Air War in Friesland’ within the broader theme Battle of the Wadden.
