The bridge is part of the Lemmer–Delfzijl Main Waterway, an important route for inland shipping. The bridge has three navigable openings. For larger ships and boats with a high mast, operation can be requested via the “Beter Bediend” website. Once approved, Rijkswaterstaat will open the bridge at the agreed time.
Due to the poor condition of the bridge, the following restrictions currently apply until its replacement, which cannot begin until 2028 at the earliest: only one lane is available due to traffic lights, and vehicles may weigh a maximum of 37 tonnes with an axle load of no more than 8 tonnes.
