Until the Reformation, Baard belonged to the Deanery of Winsum within the Roman Catholic Church. The ecclesiastical connection with Winsum has existed for about 800 years. After the Reformation, Baard shared the pastorate with the Reformed Congregation Winsum.

The church building has been rebuilt several times in the same location over the centuries. The current church and tower date from the late 1800s. The interior was adapted in the late 1900s without compromising its simple, intimate character. Space has been created for activities beyond just sitting and listening. The church now provides more room for liturgical activities and is also used for music lessons, choir rehearsals, concerts, and as an exhibition space.
