Molen De Hond is a characteristic grain and pearl barley mill dating from 1861. This Dutch-style smock mill with a gallery is owned by Stichting De Fryske Mole and is a distinctive landmark in the Frisian landscape.
Thanks to its location below the sea dike, the mill can be seen from a great distance. It has an octagonal wooden body built on a brick base. Both the body and the cap are thatched with reed. The sails have a span of 19 metres and feature traditional Dutch-style sail latticework. The wooden tail assembly, fitted with a winding wheel, allows the cap to be turned into the wind.
The technical details also reflect the traditional craftsmanship of millwrights. De Hond features a cast-iron windshaft, a sliding tail-bearing system supported by wooden crossbeams, and a Flemish braking system with a thumb-mounted attachment. Together, these features make the mill a remarkable part of Friesland’s industrial heritage.
