Galerie LYTS was founded in 2018 and originated from a private collection.
The name LYTS
The collection initially consisted mainly of small paintings from the first half of the twentieth century, often presented in attractive gilded frames. The subjects were mostly landscapes and floral still lifes. “LYTS” refers both to the small size of the paintings and to the idea that such artworks should also be affordable for people with a modest budget. Later, the collection focused mainly on expressionist works.
The gallery
The gallery is located in a listed historic building called “De Bakkerij” at Midstrjitte 63 in the centre of Woudsend. The building was constructed in 1805 and was originally used as a shop and residence for a bakery with an adjoining bakery shop. It later served as an office and branch of the insurance company Fortis, later known as A.S.R., which had taken over Woudsend Verzekeringen in the late 1960s and was based at Iewâl until 2012.
Expressionism
LYTS is mainly inspired by expressionist movements such as the Groningen artists’ collective De Ploeg, the Bergen School, Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter.
Exhibitions
Each year during the summer season, LYTS organises an exhibition featuring works by artists active in the north of the Netherlands.
