Surhuisterveen, often simply called “’t Fean” by locals (even though that’s technically the Frisian name of Heerenveen), is a fairly large village in Northeast Friesland.
The village name refers to the period when peat was extracted here, starting in the 16th century. A fun place to visit is Museumboerderij Ot en Sien, where you can experience what life felt like a hundred years ago.
There is also a windmill that still grinds flour, and you’ll find plenty of shops and cafés in the village. Surhuisterveen even has its own slogan: “Surhuisterveen, there’s only one that’s this gezellig!”
Around the village, you can enjoy lovely cycling and walking routes through the Nationaal Landschap Noardlike Fryske Wâlden.
