Iezumasyl
A hidden gem in Northeast Friesland: Iezumasyl! Take a walk past the centuries-old lock, discover the new fish passage, and enjoy the views along the bird-rich Bochtjesplaat route.
Take a look
Iezumasyl: a hamlet known for its centuries-old sluice and floodgate (1672). There is a drawbridge over the sluice. A fish passage was recently (2023) constructed next to the sluice. This allows fish to travel to and from the Lauwersmeer inland waterway to spawn and/or grow.
The Wetterskip Fryslân pumping station in this hamlet is also remarkable. If necessary, it can pump away 1 million litres of water per minute! This pumping station is not open to the public.
The lock and its surroundings are ideal for walking! This is also where the Bochtjesplaat boot path (laarzenpad) starts. This 1.5-kilometre route passes through an area rich in birdlife. Waders in particular like to visit here. Along the path you’ll find a viewpoint with beautiful wide-open views.
