The Drents-Friese Wold Outdoor Centre is the gateway to Drents-Friese Wold National Park.The Centre is directly accessible from the main road and there is plenty of parking.
At the Outdoor Centre there is an exhibition about the forest (Grenzeloos Wold) with lots of information about the nature in the National Park. There is also a shop that stocks a wide range of nature books, gifts and local products, the IJgenweis forest brasserie and a place to hold meetings.
The Centre runs a range of activities. Children can dress up as a badger or a forest ranger and engage in educational programmes. Ways of exploring the area include recreational routes and interactive discovery trails. There is also a special Family Trail suitable for wheelchair users and the visually impaired.

You don’t have to explore the forest on your own. The Outdoor Centre organises excursions and other activities throughout the year. You can find details on the website of Staatsbosbeheer, the national forestry organisation that oversees the Netherlands’ green heritage. At the moment this information is only available in Dutch.

This cycling tour narrated by Arjan Postma takes you from Appelscha to Veenhuizen and back. You visit Fochteloërveen nature reserve and Drents-Friese Wold National Park, and get to see both areas of Friesland and a small part of Drenthe.
Hoewel je op deze wandelroute slechts een klein deel van het Drents-Friese Wold te zien krijgt, is het een mooie kennismaking met één van de grootste aaneengesloten bosgebieden van ons land.
De Hein Mader Kunstroute is opgedeeld in twee routes. De 1e route gaat naar Oldeberkoop en terug.
De 2e route gaat via het Fochteloërveen richting Haule en via Makkinga/Oosterwolde terug.
Appelscha is voor beide het startpunt.
