Artwork Maarten van der Weijden who had to stop his Elfstedenzwemtocht in Burdaard in 2018.
The long-distance swimmer made an attempt to swim the Elfstedentocht in 2018, to raise money for cancer research. But near Burdaard he was too exhausted to reach the final city of Dokkum. He had already swum 163 kilometers and spent 55 hours in the water...
He tried again in 2019 and then he did succeed, completing the "tour of tours" by swimming the entire route! It was an emotional moment, in which the whole of the Netherlands sympathized.
Artist Hans Jouta made the beautiful sculpture Op handen gedragen ("Adored") free of charge.
