Take a look

The lock is located in the Prinses Margriet Canal near Terherne and connects the Sneekermeer with the Terhornstermeer. The lock was opened in 1951 but is now out of use. The passage is now always open to shipping. With a length of 260 metres and a width of 16 metres, it was once a real lock.

During the Second World War, the lock was bombed to disrupt German transport lines. The wives of both lock keepers, a baby and a German soldier were killed. Since 1985, a monument has stood on the northern pier in memory of this tragic event. Every year, a memorial service is held here together with the village primary school.

After the war, the lock lost its function as a protective lock. The southern passage now houses a boathouse for the provincial yacht of Fryslân, and a guest house was built on the site of the former lock keeper's house.
