In Mitselwier, you’ll find a simple church with a pointed tower dating from 1776, built on the site of a medieval predecessor. Part of the interior, including the pulpit, also dates from 1776.
The church is a national monument and features a memorial stone in the outer wall showing how high the water rose during the All Saints' Flood of 1570.
Inside, a memorial with a bust commemorates the renowned 17th-century preacher Balthasar Bekker, who was born in Mitselwier in 1634 and died in Amsterdam in 1698. He challenged various forms of superstition in his influential and groundbreaking book De betoverde Werelt. His motto was ‘sien gaet voor horen’.
The Protestant congregation Metslawier-Niawier uses the Doarpstsjerke for worship services.
