Water Gate Sneek

Sneek

The Water Gate in Sneek is perhaps the city’s most recognisable landmark. This stone structure is characterised by its two octagonal towers.

Take a look

The Water Gate was likely built around 1492, at the same time as the city walls. The gate served to control access to the city by water. Since 1613, it has functioned solely as a decorative gateway and no longer has a defensive purpose.

Did you know that the clock is always 5 minutes ahead? This dates from the age that the Water Gate was still part of the city walls. It gave people enough warning to leave the city on time, or to get back in. Because it was all locked down at night.
