The bell tower in the village of Loënga rises high above the graveyard and has a saddle roof. The original bell, cast in 1670, was requisitioned by the occupying forces during the Second World War and melted down for munitions. It was replaced by a new bell cast by the Van Bergen bell foundry in Heiligerlee in 1950. Inscribed on the bell is the following poem:
Myn wente stiet in Loaijingea
Myn lûd heard Snits oant Goaijingea
Ik loovje hjir mei myn gebrom
It Fryske lân fol ear and rom
Ik rop ta wurk, ik rop ta rêst
En hâld it leauen oan God fest.
The words of this Frisian poem translate as:
I am housed in Loënga
My sound is heard from Sneek to Goënga
My resonance rings out to the glory
And honour of the Frisian land
I call people to work, I call them to rest
And to hold strong their faith in God.
The bell is rung at 12:00 and 16:00 every day except Sunday. The day after a death is announced in the village, the bell tolls for half an hour from nine o'clock in the morning.
