Oostmahorn has only been an official village since 2006. Before that, it was a hamlet under Anjum, but it grew with the arrival of several holiday parks. The number of residents, however, has remained around 80.

Oostmahorn is especially attractive to visitors because it lies right on the Lauwersmeer. From the marina you can sail straight onto the waters of Friesland’s northernmost lake.

In the past, Oostmahorn was a fortified stronghold, which is why it is still known in Frisian as “De Skâns”. From the mid-16th century, the area around the Lauwerszee was troubled by privateers and smugglers, so a fortress to guard the waterway towards Dokkum was far from a luxury.

Today, Oostmahorn’s doors are wide open to guests. Holiday parks, floating houses, campsites, restaurants and a ferry make a stay here complete. You may have heard of Esonstad, a holiday park built with historic-style facades, located right in Oostmahorn.

Oostmahorn is part of the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân.
