The coat of arms of Hindeloopen

“Hindeloopen’s fountain committee gave me a lot of information on the history and the stories of Hindeloopen. I was inspired by Hindeloopen’s coat of arms, particularly by the myth surrounding it.

The coat of arms of Hindeloopen

“Hindeloopen’s fountain committee gave me a lot of information on the history and the stories of Hindeloopen. I was inspired by Hindeloopen’s coat of arms, particularly by the myth surrounding it.

The city coat of arms consists of a tree surrounded by a stag and a doe. According to the myth, the tree is a 'tree of life'. It has its roots in the underworld and its branches point to the sky. The tree symbolizes the life force, but also stands for wisdom. The stag and the doe feed on this.

The tree of life gets a central place in my design of the fountain. It is surrounded by large antlers lying on the ground. In the tree are birds that spout water at irregular intervals. The antlers, which reference the primal power of the stag and doe, also bring to mind the roots and branches of the tree.

The artwork is locally made from sustainable wood. You can sit on it in order to look at the festive tree. A basalt basin around the tree catches the water. There are also some holes in the ground under reinforced glass, which display Hindeloopen floral designs. They are illuminated in the evening, which reinforces the beautiful, poetic atmosphere.”
