Long description (EN)
When the plaster was removed in the 1960s, the warm red colour of the Sint-Bonifatiuskerk reappeared. The church is among the oldest Frisian houses of worship built in this material and is (of course) dedicated to Bonifatius, the famous missionary who was murdered in this region.
The masonry seems to contain traces of a lost extension. What we do know for sure is that the current straight choir closure used to be round. In 1914, a transept was added to the north side of the choir. The saddle roof is not original either, as it was once preceded by a spire roof. Beautiful are the climbing blind niches above the bell openings.
The centrepiece (and highlight) of the otherwise understated interior is the white pulpit, featuring the coats of arms of the Van Kleffens-Botnia family and personifications of Faith, Hope and Charity.
