In and around the village of Appelscha there are 17 outdoor sculptures by the Austrian artist Hein Mader. Some can be seen on roundabouts; others are in the middle of the forest.

Mader was inspired by nature and created works of art that portray the sun, wind and dynamics of balance. Though they are made of solid steel, his sculptures appear to move. They wave with the wind and extend up towards the light.

At the VVV tourist information office in Appelscha you can pick up a booklet with details of a cycling route that leads past all 17 sculptures.

Works of art by Hein Mader can also be seen in the village of Oldeberkoop among other places.
