In the heart of the Midstraat shopping street in Joure, you'll find De Witte Os, one of the oldest and best known Douwe Egberts shops in the Netherlands. This historic shop is part of Museum Joure and takes you back in time.
As soon as you step inside, you'll experience the atmosphere of a 19th century shop. The wooden floor, blue ceiling beams and original counter are reminders of the past. You can still buy freshly roasted coffee from the museum's coffee roastery, various types of loose leaf tea, traditional sweets and other treats. You'll also find a selection of gift packages.
The history of De Witte Os dates back to 1871, when the company Wed. Douwe Egberts Zoon purchased the building as a shop selling colonial goods. From Joure, Douwe Egberts grew into a coffee brand known around the world. In 2018, De Witte Os was even featured as one of KLM's famous Delft Blue miniature houses.
Admission to De Witte Os is free. From the shop, you can continue into Museum Joure, where you can learn more about the history of Douwe Egberts and other traditional crafts from Joure.
