Bonkevaart - Elfstedentocht Finish Line
Leeuwarden
Whether you experience it standing on the ice, on the bank, or from the water, this historic stretch of water is a must-visit!
Take a look
Since 1985, this stretch of water has been the finish line of the Elfstedentocht tour skating event.
But even when it is not cold enough to skate, there is always something to see and do in the area.
In 2019, a beautiful work of art was unveiled: The Finish Arch. Inspired by the Elfstedenkruisje (the finisher's medal), the arch uses the water's reflection to create the illusion of a complete cross. An idea and design by artist duo Saskia Hoogendoorn and Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands. The arch is 17.17 meters wide and 12.15 meters high. The arch has blue LED lights, giving the structure a stunning glow at night.
Surroundings:
There is plenty to do around the artwork. For example, you will find a restaurant, boat rental and a sailing school at the Grote Wielen and on the other side of the Groningerstraatweg at the Kleine Wielen/Groene Ster a beautiful nature reserve, AquaZoo, gold course and Park Vijversburg. Ideal for a day out! In the neighborhood near the Bonkevaart you will find "Bonkebeach": a water playground, football field and a village.
